    • Turbocharged four-cylinder Cayman by 2016? Porsche's own turbo four cylinder motor likely a few years away

How does a turbo Cayman sound? Pretty good? Yep, PorscheBoost thinks so too and rumors have been swirling regarding a 350 horsepower range topping Cayman Turbo. The idea really isn't all that crazy and Porsche is actually downsizing motors for turbo variants that offer more power and torque as they recently did in the Panamera S and 4S which get a new turbocharged V6 in lieu of the naturally aspirated V8 they were previously equipped with.

Autocar states the new Porsche turbo four cylinder won't come until 2016. The Macan SUV is sure to get a VW sourced 2.0 liter turbo four-banger as an entry level motor. What is likely more accurate is Porsche's own built turbo four cylinder which is said to be based on the current flat-6 motors won't be seen until 2016. But... another source states the motor will be ready by the end of the year and that would mean a debut at the Frankfurt auto show this September although with the Boxster/Cayman just launching this seems unlikely. The Cayman "S" or "Turbo" featuring this motor is likely to bridge the gap between the highest performance Cayman model and the base 991 Carrera if not exceed the current 911 Carrera which makes sense by 2016 when updates will be due.

The engine is expected to be all aluminum and direct injected. Basically, expect a Carrera S 3.8 DFI motor with two cylinders missing. The redline is expected to be in the 7500 rpm range with a displacement of 2.5 liters and a 2.0 liter version also may be in the works. This is one we will all just have to wait out.

This car will probably get the award for most cramped engine bay ever.

Should be a nice improvement in performance though.

        hmm. pretty interesting.

though if they were going 2.5, i'd love to see them use the 5cyl 2.5 that comes in the TT-RS. would be a pretty good building block

        The 5-cylinder is Audi only.

unfortunately. The other 2.5 5cyl VAG engine out now is quite a bit different

Will be watching this one closely... I wonder how they will keep a 2.5 flat four sounding like a Porsche instead of a Subaru.

They have done flat fours before, so there is a historical link.
