    • Performance numbers for the 2013 W216 CL65 AMG with the updated M279 Twin Turbo V12 - 12.6@120 1/4 mile

Mercedes-Benz 65 AMG vehicles still feature the same basic twin turbo V12 displacing 6.0 liters but it has been updated with several key tweaks from the previous M275 engine. The new M279 gets an updating ignition system, engine management system, cylinder heads, turbos, and manifolds. It is still the same basic SOHC (single overhead cam) 32 valve design but updated and now producing 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.

So how do the performance numbers for the updated V12 look? Well, not all that much different and tough to see a significant improvement. Car and Driver got a rather pathetic 12.6@120 in the 1/4 mile. Why pathetic? Because a 12.6 with all that torque is a horribly slow ET and previous generation 65 AMG models were easily in the 11's on street tires in the 1/4 mile. Somebody at Car and Driver does not know how to launch an AMG.

Car and Driver got a 12.3@121 out of the M157 5.5 liter V8 based 2012 CL63 AMG. Ouch... that car is the same chassis but it weighs slightly less. Car and Driver states the difference is 51 pounds but the difference between the SL65 and SL63 AMG is much larger so come to your own conclusion on their weight testing accuracy. Especially considering the test numbers favor the less powerful V8 with 'only' 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque.

Is the CL65 AMG worth the $64,830 penalty over the CL63 AMG? BenzBoost can not think of a reason why it would be.

Wow these are terrible numbers...they clearly don't know how the hell to drive it. This is embarrassing, for them. This car is capable of much, much more. We've all seen it.

Not for me it wasn't. But always wanting a 12 cylinder engine for no other reason then wanting one, I settled on a CL600.

        Bucket list item checked!

The 600 is the best value in MB tuning.

Pick up a used one that depreciated like a rock, tune it, done.
