• New quickest and fastest BMW N55 1/4 mile record - Vargas Turbo Tech upgraded and JB4 tuned 335 runs 11.4@123

Congratulations are in order to BMS (Burger Motorsports) and Vargas Turbo Technologies on pushing the N55 BMW platform to new hights. Aftermarket BMW tuning has been dominated by the BMW N54 twin turbo motor up until this point and the newer single turbo N55 inline-6 motor has not received quite as much attention. As the N54 is out of production the N55 is finally getting a bit of tuner love and the proof is below in a new quickest and fastest world record 1/4 mile run.

This 335 is the same car that set the N55 horsepower record last week with a 468 wheel horsepower run on a Dynojet thanks to its upgraded turbocharger from Vargas. BMS did the tuning and the result is a new world record in the real world on the drag strip. The 335 in question in an automatic vehicle and the run took place at the Famoso drag strip in California.

This is still very early in the upgraded turbocharger game for the N55 motor so enthusiasts can expect the numbers to improve over the next year as the N55 motor finally gets to the next level. Congratulations to all involved, well done.

Not heard of any head problems with the N55. On the N20 I know the rods are weak but not heard of many head problems there either. I'll be sure to update the thread if the head cracks. Click here to enlarge

First N55 besides the test unit left the shop today, on its way to a customer in China. Looking forward to seeing what results they can get with it. I know the car is a 2011. Besides that I am not sure what the specs are.

I'm curious if the rods are forged in the N55.

Almost all modern cars using powdered metal forged. There are a lot of different processes loosely called "forging" and with widely varying alloys. The net result is the word forged as applied to con rods and people's understanding of it's value IMO are often misunderstood/exaggerated.

OEM rods are designed to meet a strength target and engineers will juggle alloys and processes to get the rod to handle the load while keeping price down. Metal is a commodity and as prices vary, I expect designers will vary alloys and processes to fit their budget and goals. So what went into the N54 may be slightly different than N55 but the rod designers are likely targeting the same rod strength in each application.

The opposite could be also true- rod alloy, process and supplier could be the same but a dip$#@! designer trying to cut cost too much could have cut too much material from the design and you wind up with a strength target too low which could lead to broken parts e.g. cracked N20 head.

IOW, I wouldn't worry about the metal or the process in isolation, look at the whole rod. Same thing goes for pistons and other parts.

My thought from earlier pictures of the N55 rod was it looked like a pretty meaty PMF rod, just like the N54. Probably no worry at all compared to the pistons. And if you're going to swap pistons and do a build, why not throw rods in there.

Forged in neither the N54 nor the N55 according to reliable shops I know who have torn them down. Current posts seem to agree.

Got an email from our customer in Hong Kong, theirs is being installed as this week. Sending out 3 more upgrades by Monday. So we should see some more soon. The guy in Hong Kong has been in direct contact with Terry for tuning, and also has a 2011

No, i'm nearly positive the rods are forged in the N54. Its the pistons that are cast.
