    • Mercedes fights off BMW for the top US luxury automotive sales numbers of 2013 - Will BMW learn from this?

Well how about that? It's funny how things work out sometimes when you achieve a goal that is a by-product of your focus on something else. In July of this year Mercedes stated they did not expect to win the 2013 luxury sales race and also stated they were fine with that implying that BMW fudges their sales numbers anyway. Mercedes instead decided to focus on quality and building the best cars in their respective segments they possibly could.

BMW on the other hand equates being number one in sales to being the best. BMW's philosophy amusingly seems to be, 'if you're not first, you're last.' Well BMW, you lost in 2013. This despite attempting to push out every variant possible to boost sales and possibly even manipulating the numbers.

Mercedes came up with the number one spot without actively trying to capture it. The final tally in the US for 2013 was 312,534 new Mercedes sold or 3,254 more cars than BMW. It is by building better cars from the bottom to the top of the lineup that Mercedes got the sales crown they deserved. Hopefully this teaches BMW a lesson. It likely will not though. Expect BMW to fire back with more BMW badged Mini Coopers to boost numbers.

Guess the launch of the 4-series and new X5 didn't work out for BMW.

Still very early for each. Mercedes crushed them with the CLA.

BMW is dead, and has been a corpse for a while.
The last good BMW was the V8 M5.

        Long live AMG.
AMG needs to release lightweight sedans with V8 TT, AWD, and DCT and continue to dominate.

I hardly think this is accurate as they are still the leader in worldwide sales.

        I'd say the M3 GTS.

The new M3 is going to be lighter than the E46. That's impressive.

The only thing BMW has been getting right is DCT.
Their cars are overweight, have no torque, and need AWD to compete with this performance leaders.

        You own a M3, so you're biased. I'm objective.
At least you have a blower on your M3 that helps to make up for the pathetic lack of torque.Click here to enlarge

The M3/M4 are 3300 pounds, what are you talking about? Why would they need AWD?

Um, no, I'm going by posted specs.

You have fun with torque and spinning tires I guess. I'll have fun with real horsepower.

        -real horsepower.
You asked and answered your own question in your post.

        BMW needs real power.
If they ever make it, then they'll need AWD to get traction on the street with street tires.

        Horsepower sells cars.
        Torque and traction wins races.

That doesn't make any sense. Since when does torque down low equal horsepower?

        L O L

Yeah, because M3's lose to everything with more torque... oh wait, no they don't. That's because horsepower wins races. Why aren't we racing all wheel drive diesels again?

I'm not quite sure what part of power to weight you don't understand. 3300 pounds for the M3/M4. Who is lighter?

Do you have any interest in learning perhaps? http://www.bimmerboost.com/content.p...l-transmission

What is lighter or available with a manual and DCT option? I can't think of anything. I'm just trying to make sense of your posts again.

After owning an M3 and an Mroadster, I QUICKLY jumped ships to MB. Although the TT M5 is intersesting, since AMG borught out their TT, game over IMHO.

The problem with mb is they haven't made the trans sporty enough IMO. They need to develop a dct, once they do that, they will be really making a dominating platform

How is it game over? The M5 is the faster car stock for stock and it handles better. It's also lighter.

Yep. The platform still emphasizes the straightline.

I truly love all cars. Even alot of junk. As much as I like the mb line up, when it comes to overall quality and handling BMW takes the cake. We can all agree that both manufacturers flop in certain areas. Whether its who they sub to on electronics or releasing new tech too early. A benz drives like grandpappies caddy. All the turbos in the world wont change it and BMW will continue to progress in the motorsports division far ahead of mb.

Just my HO my friend. After owning 2 BMW's, I would be very hard pressed to go back. The MB's just win in everything day to day, again MHO.

PS: Has ANYONE ever received the gas mileage that BMW claims, LOL

My M roadster struggled to get double digits. Heck, I had to stop 6 times for gas driving from Myrtle beach back to Pittsburgh.

Almost forgot, I test drove a 2010 535xi, and that numb steering wheel you can keep all to yourself.

The salesman asked what I liked, and I told him "The heated steering wheel was nice"

The rest he could keep, LOLClick here to enlarge

Bmw is $#@! and don't know how to make cars....Mercedes is too cause they are putting a tiny 4.0tt in their new C63.
