The main change for the 2014 season is the introduction of a turbocharged powerplant. The naturally aspirated 2.4 liter V8 is replaced with a 1.6 liter turbocharged and direct injected V6. The motor is limited to 15,000 rpm and cars have a maximum fuel allotment of 100 kilograms per race. Additionally, the maximum fuel flow rate is limited to 100 kg/hour. The size of the turbocharger is not regulated. Another change is 8 forward gear ratios up from seven and the gearbox is required to last six race (up from five). Some pretty tough restrictions for the manufacturers to follow that will no doubt play a part in capping power output and not letting it get out of control as it did in the 80's.
The Mercedes engine is known as the PU106A Hybrid.
Nico Rosberg and the $100 million dollar man Lewis Hamilton return to drive for the Mercedes team. This season should be very exciting and it will be interesting to see how the teams deal with all the changes. Let's hope for a competitive 2014 F1 season.
