• BMS E82 135i FFTEC N54 Single Turbo Kit Dyno Testing - 585 wheel horsepower

      Been racking up miles on the 135i and fixing little things. And finally had a chance to get to the dyno today for some baseline testing. As I've mentioned I've been VERY pleased with the FFTEC twin scroll top mount 5862 turbocharger kit. On road performance and spool is much better than any other combinations I've driven.


      Testing details:


      2008 135i Steptronic (original trans, for now)
      JB4 single turbo firmware & supporting flash
      FFTEC 5862 top mount single turbo
      BigTom intercooler, BMS OCC, BMS stat, etc
      Walbro 255 inline fuel pump mod
      Factory exhaust system (did not bother to open cutout)
      ~E30 mix for for 17psi runs. For 20psi+ runs enabled meth kit for fueling using a single CM10 nozzle.


      Notes:
      1) Was not going after any power records so left the tuning very conservative all around. At the same boost levels there is easily another 15hp in this setup with more advance. And no reason this turbo can't be cranked up to 28psi when the trans is ready.
      2) It made a lot more power than I was expecting. It's basically on pace with the 6466 at these lower boost levels only with much better spool.
      3) If the trans would shift this car would be seriously quick. I'll get to work on that ASAP.

        @Terry@BMS I meant to ask you in this thread when you first started it...did you get a chance to try launching with this turbo yet? I'm curious how the car came off the line compared to stock turbos?

        I tried but trans would not take it. We'll see how it does with the lvl10.

        For those interested in a what a mild FFTEC 5858 bottom mount setup puts out we did a couple runs today with Ando's 335. It's an automatic trans running 93 octane and 17psi as a daily driver setup.

        For kicks we also ran it at 23psi with meth enabled but the octane wasn't quite up to the task. He will be testing the car this weekend at ShiftSector with race gas. Very curious to see how it will perform. Click here to enlarge

        Do you have any graphs that show the rpm from 1000 up? I just want to get a better picture of how this spools.

        Definitely good power with mid 500's.

        I see "stage 2" turbo options basically being obsolete soon. I mean, to keep them at the levels where they seem to be very reliable isn't a big upgrade over stock, so I see a lot of people going this route with smaller singles. On the street I bet it makes pretty good boost by 3000RPM, making it a TON of fun

        The runs are done on a dynojet in 4th gear. On the street this one hits its boost target around 3400rpm.

        There are reliability factors as well. Single turbos basically get started where RBs max out. Ando is happy with around 500rw on pump + meth so for now the car will stay around 20psi.

        Smaller turbo graphs look so much linear and easier to tame LOL. The power doesn't just jump and bite you in your ass.

        It feels pretty smooth racing around. Would be a lot more fun with 50whp more.. But that will come with time. For now I'm hoping he can have a fun days racing without breaking anything.

        Looks like my 135i is ready as well. I'll pick it up tomorrow and get to testing the trans out!

        Hell yea Terry!! There is no break in period for the trans or clutches that they upgrade!?!? Keep driving it around you have more than enough time till Saturday..

        So stoked to see what the E82 can do with a happy transmission. Could be in for some stupid fast times.

        IMO, at least on paper, this type of setup is ideal for a daily driven N54. Doesn’t require ridiculous amounts of fuel, can make great power on pump, doesn’t have the lazy spool of a 6466 or similarly sized turbo, and the curve looks absolutely beautiful. Full spool by what, a little north of 3K?

        Terry can you please bump this thread if this guy’s 6AT quits on him at his current-ish power levels? I’m very curious to see how/if it holds that type of power, WHP seems to be on the ragged edge of what it’ll hold. Torque seems to come on in a pretty civilized manner so maybe that’ll help, the torque bomb of stock frames sure as hell doesn’t.

        I'm guessing 7-9K when all is said and done? Not sure but very curious.

        There's no hidden prices. Here's FFtec pricing for the kit. Keep in mind some misc. parts plus labor, so I'd say closer to ~$10k from FFtec. Of course custom shops will vary.

        Yea I did a crap job explaining my “estimate”. I meant $7K for the hotside parts and the countless tiny things that I’m sure go wrong when doing serious work like this.

        When all is said and done, $10K makes perfect sense from FFTEC. Though I expect that price will fall a tiny bit with time.
