• AMG's M133 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor takes home two 2014 International Engine of the Year Awards including best new engine

      Congratulations to AMG! The M133 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine is getting the recognition it deserves from the global automotive engineering community as it should. Not only is the engine the most powerful four-cylinder engine currently in production it is also a bit underrated in its output. The M133 dethroned the previous winner which was the BMW N20 2.0 liter four-cylinder motor in the 1.8 liter to 2.0 liter category.


      The M133 also wins the 2014 International Engine of the Year Award for the Best New Engine category. That makes for two awards in its first year of eligibility and it finished fourth in the overall Engine of the Year category.

      The M133 continues to prove those who doubted the idea of an AMG four-cylinder wrong.

        No surprise, the CLA 45 is a $#@!ing beast. Stock vs stock it's almost as quick as my E92 M3 until around 80 when the M3 starts to pull away significantly. In my experience, the 45 also returns pretty good gas mileage in the real world and is nice and smooth, certainly smoother than I expect 4 cylinders to be. The real weak point in the little AMG is its transmission and it's mainly the transmission programming. Manual mode is pretty much worthless, there is a TON of paddle shift delay and the M133 revs so quick that you will bang into the rev limiter every time unless you pull the paddle way early especially since the motor only revs to around 6,000rpm. It's one of the few cars that I just leave in the sporty automatic setting and let it shift for itself, it does a great job of downshifting and keeping you right in the powerband.

        It's a real shame to attach a work of art like the M133 to such a lame duck of a transmission.

        Well some companies apparently have transmission upgrades out there already. So this area can probably be improved but regardless the M133 is a sick little motor.
