And the records continue to be broken in the cold Winter weather! Congratulations to BenzBoost member lowprofile for raising the bar for the W211 E55 platform. At MIR (Maryland International Raceway) he was able to run a 10.59@130. This is the quickest ET achieved to date although not the fastest trap achieved on the platform but there is some controversy over the accuracy of the recorded record trap. ...

A big congratulations to BenzBoost member Dodger63. He raised the bar significantly turning a 10.6@130 all motor at Maryland International Raceway this week. This is the quickest naturally aspirated pass to date for any M156 equipped vehicle. The vehicle essentially has bolt on's with a new race gas tune and was run on drag radials with skinnies up front. There is also a bit of weight reduction provided by carbon fiber body pieces. Congratulations once again! ...

Mercedes seems to be quite serious about expanding its all wheel drive offerings on all their vehicles. Just recently we announced that the AMG models would be more widely adopting 4Matic and Mercedes intends to put it on entry level cars as well. The 2012 C350 coupe will have optional all wheel drive and we expect it to make it to the sedan as well. Some Mercedes cars are 4Matic only already such as the E550 and CL550. ...

This is not a joke although we wish it was. This "modified" (more like destroyed) Mercedes SLR belongs to Swiss entrepreneur Ueli Anliker who is selling it for a cool $11 million dollars. Nope, no typo. 30,000 hours of work were apparently put into this SLR that features 24 carat gold accents and 600 rubies. The vehicle will be brought to the Middle East next month which is the only place on the planet someone might have bad enough taste combined with deep enough pockets to buy this. Ronald McDonald apparently is not on the potential client list even though this SLR would fit his color scheme perfectly. Our advice? Get a stock SLR if you are in the market and keep the change. ...

Mercedes clearly has a desire to promote the AMG brand name as much as possible as that is fine by us. The name of the Mercedes Formula 1 team for 2012 will now include AMG in the title. There is more to this name change than just brand awareness however. The Mercedes Formula 1 powertrain facility in Brixworth, UK has worked closely with the AMG division for a number of years now so it is great to see AMG get the credit they deserve. ...

Here is a little teaser of the upcoming M113K supercharger upgrade from Weistec Engineering. The supercharger used will be a 3.0 liter unit which is larger than the blower used for the M156 kits. It will produce much more power with much less heat than the stock unit. In addition, Weistec will be seeking CARB approval for the Stage I which considering the precedent set with the M156 kit they should able to achieve again making for 2 CARB legal Mercedes supercharger offerings. ...

There are internal discussions at AMG regarding moving AMG vehicles to all wheel drive. This is not all that shocking considering how high the power output is getting on AMG vehicles and that they have been traction limited in 0-60 sprints for some time now. Better traction control has helped but Mercedes has already moved to all wheel drive on certain models such as the E550 which is available in 4matic all wheel drive only. ...

The race for luxury leader in the USA is getting tighter. November sales had Mercedes coming out on top of BMW. Mercedes is now just 1600 units behind BMW for all of 2011. BMW moved 21,521 units in November which was an increase of 7%. This makes two months in a row that Mercedes has topped BMW despite BMW increasing its sales. If Mercedes had a December to remember (yes, the rhyming was intentional) they can beat out BMW for the year. ...

We thought this eventually might come but not so soon. Weistec has decided to sell a naturally aspirated tune for the M156 V8 which offers gains of 47 wheel horsepower on 91 octane, impressive. In addition to the horsepower gain torque is upped by 32 wheel, the speed limiter is removed, and the throttle response is optimized. The price is a very reasonable $990 which also is credited toward a supercharger purchase should one decide they want more power. ...

Congratulations yet again to Renntech. Not too long ago a Renntech tuned CLS 63 AMG ran 11.3@125 which stood for almost 2 months as the M157 record. The record is now 11.2@126 with a run in negative density altitude at Palm Beach International Raceway. The vehicle was listed as running on slicks and we do not know the fuel but assume race gas. Regardless, well done. 10's are right around the corner for this platform which is just barely getting warmed up. ...

The Mercedes SL is a great touring car with a folding hard top. That folding hard top however added a ton of weight to the car. A 2 seat pseudo-sports car should not weigh more than a mid size sedan. This is the reason why the E55 AMG was actually faster than the SL55 AMG since it was lighter. Mercedes intends to drop the weight of the car by 300 pounds which should put it around the 4100 pound mark. How are they doing this? Through extensive use of aluminum in the frame and body shell. SL is supposed to stand for sport-lightweight and although over 4000 pounds is not light dropping weight is the right move. ...

Um, this seems to be an answer to a question nobody asked. We have already received the coupe and the sedan is likely coming as well but we just can not figure out why Mercedes would want to do an estate version. The Black Series is supposed to be a hardcore and more track focused version of the base AMG car and we just can not imagine too many station wagon owners wishing their vehicle carved corners better. The pictures do not lie and Mercedes is testing it but the European market is likely where this will have any appeal. ...

This is something we have been waiting to see for a while. An M157 comparison between a standard CLS 63 AMG, a performance package CLS 63 AMG, and a Renntech tuned CLS 63 AMG. The standard car puts down 483 wheel and 478 wheel torque. The performance package ups this to 516 and 544 respectively which is a very nice jump. The Renntech tune then takes this to 583 wheel horsepower and 643 wheel torque which is just about a 100 pound-foot gain on top of the performance package. Incredible? Yes. ...

The 2011 Formula 1 season is officially over. For Mercedes, there were ups and downs (mostly downs unfortunately). Redbull and Sebastian Vettel simply dominated and it was not ever really close. The fight for second and third place was really the only exciting battle. Michael Schumacher finished the season in 8th place. Interestingly, one spot behind his teammate Nico Rosberg. Congratulations to Sebastian Vettel for a dominating season and we look forward to next year which hopefully is more competitive. ...

Well, congratulations to Sebastian Vettel who broke the record for pole positions in a season with 15. This breaks Nigel Mansell's record which stood for 19 years. A remarkable achievement any way one looks at it. Nico Rosberg qualified in 6th place making the top 10 in 18 of the last 19 races. Michael Schumacher in what may be his last race qualified in the 10th position. The last race of the season takes place tomorrow at 8 AM PST. ...
