We finally have some test numbers for the new M278 4.7 liter direct injected twin turbo V8 that will be going into all the new Mercedes 550 models. In the very heavy CL550 at California Speedway (a notoriously slow drag strip) Edmunds Insidline was able to hit a 12.8@109 on street tires. This is in an almost 4700 pound car. What this means is with this motor in the E class the new E550 is going to be putting up acceleration numbers that won't be too far off the previous generation E63 AMG with the M156 naturally aspirated V8. The new E550 is going to be a very fast car and this bodes well for the new E63 AMG. The new CL550 basically matches the elapsed time of the previous naturally aspirated CL63 AMG and is a few MPH off its trap speed. ...

Bruno Spengler conitnued his strong racing for Mercedes finishing in second place after taking the pole in qualifying. Spengler won the first of the season but was not able to hold off Mike Rockenfeller in his Audi. Audi took the 1st, 3rd, and 5th spots with Mercedes taking 2nd and 4th out of the top 5. The next race is in 21 days in Austria. ...

This is unconfirmed as official but several sites are reporting that Mercedes intends to wind down the G-wagon production with a bang. Most details are coming from Autoblog.nl who reports a 600 horsepower version of the G-class with the M275 twin turbo V12 is coming. They also report that the price would be around $300,000 which makes absolutely no sense. Yes, a twin turbo V12 G-wagon is cool, but for $300k there are a lot of other things to purchase where that kind of money would be better spent. The price is likely off, if not the entire story. ...

Here we have an R171 SLK 55 AMG that has been tuned by Eurocharged. The SLK55 has a 5.4 liter naturally aspirated V8 that is pretty potent to begin with offering 355 horsepower. Eurocharged is able to raise that by 19 horsepower at the wheels. The graphs show gains over the baseline throughout the entire curve. The tuning is very smooth and the they are able to get gains without aggressively leaning the car out. Just smooth, solid tuning across the powerband, well done. ...

Autoscoops.be is reporting that it has the exclusive leaked images of the production A-class. You will notice that it differs a bit from the concept which is not really a shock as it is toned down for production. The design is almost a bit boring compared to the hot hatch coupe concept. It is also reported to be front wheel drive which is disappointing to say the least. ...

We know you have been waiting for dyno numbers for the M157 with baited breath just like we have. Now, the sleepless nights can finally come to an end. Insideline dyno tested the S63 AMG featuring the new twin turbo V8 powerplant with the optional Performance Package and all we have to say is: TORQUE, A LOT OF TORQUE. Wow, over 600 pound-feet at the wheels. They also overlaid the graph with the M159 naturally aspirated v8 out of the Mercedes SLS AMG and once you see the curves compared we don't think you or anyone else is going to miss the M156/M159 motor very much. ...

The SLK isn't the manliest car to begin with but Piecha Design has managed to add some aggression to the new R172 SLK. From the quad exhaust to the front lip this car does a good job previewing what the AMG version may look like. If you are wondering why you see the sideskirts lightning up it is because there is an LED light option for the sideskirs. Yes, it seems tuners aren't satisfied with just sticking LED's in the front bumper but now are trying to put them anywhere they can. Price and part list is below. ...

Here is the Carlsson offering for the new E-class convertible. Pretty standard fair as expected with the usual body pieces. Carlsson offers a front lip, sideskirts, diffuser, and trunk spoiler. Carlsson exhaust tips are included with their exhaust offering. An ECU upgrade is available for the diesel model thus far (which is not available in the USA) with others coming shortly. Carlsson wheels and lowering springs round out the overall well done package which we like although we could do without the huge Carlsson grille badge. ...

We would like to thank BenzBoost user 220S for helping us obtain the dealer order guide. There are some very interesting things in the dealer document namely that the E550 will only come in 4Matic. No rear wheel drive E550? Yes, sounds very odd but look at the document yourself. The guide also confirms that the W212 E63 wagon with the M157 twin turbo motor will be coming to the USA. Very cool, but we still do not understand why the decision was made for the E550 to be all wheel drive only. ...

Now, you might be scratching your head, why 573 whp when the previous dyno released was 640 whp? Well, this dyno no longer has the dip the 640 whp dyno had which leads us to believe the boost was turned down to not have torque limiter issues. We were told this dyno was 10-11 psi vs. the previous 14 psi. The dyno was done on C16 race gas as well, just like the previous dyno. What we gather from this is that going over 10 psi created issues for the torque limiters in the ECU and transmission software. So while this dyno does not make as much power, it is cleaner and provides a steady curve until redline. ...

Hot on the heals of the reveal that the E63 AMG would be making the switch to the M157 turbo V8, Mercedes has announced that the E550 for 2012 will receive the M278 4.7 liter direct injected V8 turbo. This motor produces 402 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque at 13 psi. What is interesting is that the BMW 550i produces about the same horsepower from 4.4 liters at only 10 psi. Audi will also be putting a turbo V8 in its upcoming S6 so the competition in this segment is going to be quite interesting. ...

We have seen this type of thing before. A car manufacturer creates a short action film to promote one of their vehicles. In this case, Mercedes-Benz TV created the short actoin film "Drive and Seek" to promote the new C-class coupe. This reminds us of the classic BMW Films but the execution just isn't quite as good in our opinion. The film is longer clearly with a large budget yet it is does not get anywhere near to approaching the effect of the famous BMW "Star" video with Madonna. ...

AMG was not always a part of Mercedes-Benz. It was originally an independent tuning house founded by former MB engineers but in 1990 AMG would officially become a part of Mercedes-Benz. The first car was the C36 AMG and you all know the story from there. AMG was really a response from Mercedes to BMW's M as they wanted an internal dedicated performance division as well with a name that would become symbolic with high performance models. ...

DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) touring car racing is extremely popular in Europe. Most people in the United States are not familiar with it but with DTM racing coming to North America in 2013 it is time to start getting acquainted. There is a good reason they are bringing it here and the video below illustrates it perfectly. The action is intense and the racing is very close with a lot of passing. The race was won by Mercedes with Audi coming in second. ...
