Autocar takes the 2014 C117 CLA45 AMG for a first drive - Video
The CLA45 AMG is poised to be a very exciting entry level AMG platform. With its 355 horsepower 2.0 liter turbocharged M133 engine mated to all wheel drive and a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox this car basically is a German EVO or STI. It's a potent platform as you hopefully saw the A45 AMG with this same driveline drag race the CLS63 AMG. The CLA45 AMG is going to be very popular due to its price point and will likely become the most popular AMG tuning platform.
So what did Autocar think of it? No test numbers yet (although mid 12 1/4 mile ET's are expected) as this was just a first drive. Mercedes figures are 0-60 in 4.6 seconds but that is likely conservative. The test driver says the CLA45 AMG does not pull quite as hard as the A45 AMG for some reason which does not make sense something he states himself.
Regardless, the steering is precise and offers good feel which is nice to hear considering this is not always a Mercedes strong point. He makes some complaints about the engine noise but it's a small four cylinder it won't sound like an AMG V8. The car handles extremely well and offers supreme confidence. Is Mercedes making better driver cars than BMW now? Sure seems like it.
BenzBoost is waiting on official test numbers but the CLA45 AMG is the most exciting model to come from Mercedes AMG in a long time. Especially considering it is much more accessible to the masses.
