CLK True Ram-Air Hood Teaser Pics

Ok guys, some of you know that I am having a new hood made. Here are some pics. I'm sure some of yu guys are not going to like the styling but it was engineered and designed with one thing in mind...HORSE POWER! I basically said try to make it as least ugly as possible while giving me the maximum amount of performance, Here is what they came up with. New slighlty longer (larger) airboxes are being built as well, they will seal off with the hood when the hood is closed creating a direct straight shot tunnel right into the airboxes, in other word TRUE Ram-Air. Project was supposed to be completed this week but they still need a few more days to mold final production hood, should be Monday for fianl hood. What you see here is a mock up, I just left the shop giving them approval on what is shown here, not they will proceed with the real hood.

Very Shelby-esque. Will have to see it on the car, but bet it'll look good/aggressive.

It sticks up a couple inches higher than the standard hood in the center but that was the only way to get accomplished what the motor needed. It will definetly give the car a more sinister and aggresive look but until I see it on the car I can't be sure. I figure worse case if I don't like the way it looks I can just bolt this on for track days, but I think I am going to like it enough to run it all the time. Should be completed next Monday and then to the body shop for paint so I might have an installed pic by mid next week.

BAD ass man - definitely aggressive and functional, not your ordinary every day AMG hood and the fact that it connects to the intake an seals off is trick - I'm sure it'll work great. Keep us posted.
Can you post picks of the engine bay ? I'd like to see the intake/airbox setup...

i don't know about stealthy........but it will definately look aggresive and serve it's purpose . you are right that if you don't like it on all the time , you can use it for track only . i like it Click here to enlarge

I was kidding. I meant run it with no hood, isnt that the best for most cooling? and air? I would have assumed the above is why.

nothing would happen. just some parts would fly, nothing serious.

Running no hood actually doesn't make a big difference and can have negative effects. Running a properly designed ram air hood directs the air and funnels it into and around the motor which increases power and cooling.

it depends on the speed we are talking about. in lower speeds, it does have positive effects on cooling and power. same is true in higher speed as well, but the aerodynamics and having the engine bay in one piece is more important lol.

This hood was not developed in a wind tunnel however the engineers that designed it used comples wind tunnel simulation software. The entire car was measured and scanned, the placement of the openings was scientific, not just a stab in the dark. The guys that built this build glass and cf bodies for NHRA funny cars and dragsters mostly, they know hoods and intakes. They don't do much European stuff but I saw some of the hoods they have developed for a C6 Z06 and a Supra and they are 5 minutes from my house so the decision was easy.

And you base this on what ? Wind tunnel testing with no hood ?? I've spent quite a bit of time in wind tunnels developing and tweaking factory aero packages for sports car racing and I can tell you that with no hood up front, the leading edge of any car will do nothing but create turbulence and a rapid variation of pressure and velocity, as opposed to a fluid, laminar airflow. Dissipation of heat will be improved up to about 20mph but after that it will trapped in the engine bay and take it's normal route down thru the transmission tunnel. At higher speeds the effect becomes worse, as do the aero characteristics become very unstable with turbulent flow and unsteady vortices. While it sounds like a good idea, running the 1/4 mile with no hood would be a very bad idea...especially at the speeds Jim is hitting.

If there is any interest in any of you buying one of these let me know, it will fit any W209 CLK but obvously the airbox portion will not work on other models and will not be true ram air. I will be testing it both with and without the ram air, one of the engineers who designed it actually says it might work better as a not sealed off ram air. I will keep you all posted.

As far as me selling these, I am not a sponsor on here nor do I want to become one, if I do sell them I will sell them at my cost, and might even just put people in touch with the builder. I am not trying to start an automotive aftermarket parts company and I don't need to make any money off anyone.

Looking great. I think I have missed all the updates on your car. Was the 660whp run the one with the wheel spin or have you run that power again?
Any plans for a built motor?
After the ESS disappointment with the E60 M5 I am pulling the trigger on this kit so excuse the off topic questions.

we ended up taking the Dymags off the car and dynoted it with the drag tires and it worked a lot better. We got a few more little things going on mt car and Earls car which will result in even higher numbers, stay tuned.
