    ML500/ML550 W166 Exhaust Upgrade...

    Hi Guys,
This is my first post so let me introduce myself... Name is David from Australia and I have just purchased an ML500 which is the same as the ML550 in the US and Europe which has the 4.7L V8 Turbo engines...
Coming off a ML350 W164 all I can say is WOW what a difference, comfort and performance in one... I really wanted to get the ML63 AMG but with a 70K price differnce here in Australia I just couldnt justify it...

So my project on this car is...
    Exhaust System
    ECU Upgrade
    Paint the Brake Calipers
    Install Video In Motion
Wrap the car in MATT BLACK
    AMG Badging
    AMG Double Spoke 22" Rims

So I have had the car for a week and have just completed the Exhaust and now the car has a real nice deep tone and just give it a little and it opens up and you can really hear the engine roar!! I have also painted the calipers in RED and am just waiting for the black AMG stickers to get put on, I have also just installed Video in motion so the front passenger can watch TV or DVD's while driving...

Here are some pictures before the mods....

I will post more photo's once I do the Matt Black finish and Rims....
In regards to ECU im looking at the Renntech or the Kleeman.. Has anyone got any experiance or advice for either of these?

    Thanks

Welcome and good luck with the project but I'd advise against AMG badges if it doesn't have an AMG motor Click here to enlarge

Do you have any issues with droning when cruising at highway speeds?

Renntech has posted the highest M278 tune numbers. I haven't seen any dyno figures from Kleemann but Renntech seems to have quite a good grasp on this motor. A tune will be your best mod, by far.

I would go with a Weistec tune - hands down they seem to be the best AMG tuner in the industry.

Hi David, do you ever do the chip upgrade ??
I have just brought an ml500, and i have brought the hofele rear diffuser with the amg tips, I have also brought the adjustable link to lower the vehicle approx 20mm. At the workshop at the moment. Chip upgrade is on the cards.

Did you do a catback system with new muffler . Is there any problem with droning and does it sound good as a ml63

I have the same car in white and am considering putting an ECU tune + high flow filter.

How much power is this car currently putting out at the wheels?

Are the M157 turbos compatible with the M278?

M157 turbos aren't compatible it unfortunately is not as simple of a sqitch.

You're in the high 300's maybe over 400 on a Dynojet. The all wheel drive will have higher losses so I'm just guessing a bit.

A tune will really wake the car up! Definitely do it. Huge torque gains too.

Thanks for the quick reply Sticky.

I noticed from some dyno graphs that the power delivery is quite linear. Will the car generate that feeling of being pushed into the seat with the ECU tune?

The car will push you into the seat FAR more with a tune. You're going to pick up big torque gains down low. If you like that feeling you will only get more of it.
