    Erebus Reveals Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG V8 Supercars

The fourth and final race car that will be competing in the Australian touring car series known as V8 Supercars has been revealed this morning.

The car is based on the latest Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and is built by Erebus Motorsport in Australia with components sourced from AMG. The cars are the first AMG race cars to ever be built outside of Germany.

Erebus is a customer team of AMG and will independently field three of its E63 AMG race cars in the 2013 season of V8 Supercars. The team already races the SLS AMG GT3 in other motorsport categories.

Erebus has been allowed to use a Mercedes-Benz as its race car in the popular V8 Supercars series due to the new car of the Future regulations, which has opened up the series to more entries.

Previously, the series was dominated by just the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon. Now it will include race cars based on those two Aussie sedans, plus the E63 AMG and even a Nissan Altima.

The Car of the Future regulations essentially call for a single ‘control’ chassis, which is common to all teams. Engines and styling, though, are unique.

While Ford and Holden teams rely on racing V-8 engines from their respective American parents, Nissan will be using a Nismo-tuned version of the V-8 in the Infiniti M56 while Erebus will be using a modified version of the V-8 found in the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG supercar.

The engines need to displace no more than 5.0 liters and have an rpm limit of between 7,000 and 7,500 revs. Output also needs to be limited to around 650 horsepower, and torque curves need to be in parity across all teams.

The 2013 season of V8 Supercars commences on February 16, when teams take to Sydney Motorsport Park for official testing. The first race is the Clipsal 500, which takes place on March 3 in the Australian city of Adelaide.

If you’re anxious to see V8 Supercars run here, you’ll get your chance on May 17-19, when the series visists the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas for its first-ever race on U.S. soil.

I mean it's cool but really has little to do with a Mercedes.

Modified M159 motor but still little to do with an actual AMG car.
