I will be adding one to my collection, however I just wish they would have had an AWD offering.

Mercedes-Benz officially confirms the 510 horsepower 4.0 liter M178 twin turbo V8 for the C190 AMG GT sports car - Specs, boost, torque, bore x stroke

We all knew a new 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 was coming but Mercedes today confirmed that the AMG GT will get an internally designated M178 motor. Why is this important? Because there will be a M177 version that goes in the C63 and the M178 will go in the AMG GT. This is not unlike the W204 generation C63 AMG getting the M156 V8 6.2 liter motor and the SLS AMG getting the M159 variant of this motor.

    Here are the specifications:

These are some solid specifications. Boost pressure from the twin turbos is 17.4 psi. At the 10.5:1 compression ratio there should be some room to increase boost even on pump gas. There likely will be a power kit from Mercedes themselves. They also left themselves room for a Black Series variant as AMG is not going to play second fiddle to Porsche. That model will also be prepared to go up against the Ferrari 458 Italia when it gets boosted.

The stroke at 92.0mm exceeds the bore of 83.0mm for an undersquare design. Mercedes did not go out of their way to make this rev but it looks like they are using a long stroke to mitigate torque loss from the lowered displacement. It still revs to 7200 rpm which certainly is decent in the direct injection boosted V8 era but it obviously is no M159.

479 lb-ft of torque is good but not great. Once again, AMG is leaving themselves room here as there is no reason they could not match the 516 lb-ft Audi gets from the same displacement.

The engine features a dry-sump oiling system so no skimping here by AMG. It will stay lubricated under high cornering forces. The cylinder bores are lined to decrease friction. The pistons are lightweight aluminum and forged for strength.

As reported first by BenzBoost, the turbos are top mount and located between the cylinders matching Audi's 4.0 TFSI layout and BMW's S63 4.4 liter twin turbo V8.

Those of you who were worried about the loss of displacement compared to the M157 should not be. This is a hell of a motor with a compact design that offers plenty of headroom.

Sticky, I have all the details on this car, only I am not allowed to share, lets just say they are going after Porsche in a BIG way with this car. They took several pages straight out if Porsche's book.

I was contacted by AMG and MBUSA over a month ago and asked if I was interestd in one and told I would be getting one of the first ones if I want it, I obviously said yes. They then contacted my dealer and filled them in on the ordering process. Although nothing official has been released I was told my car would arrive in Feb. barring any production delays. AMG is offering stuff they have never offered before with this car, it's going to take the AMG name to an entire new level. I will share that I was told the GT price point would come in well under the price of a base SLS

I would expect it to considering its losing a bit of the styling appeal and the doors of course. Not to mention they are positioning it against the 911.

There will be several flavors of this car.

Little disappointed with that torque number but you can only get so much out of an almost-square 3982 cc engine.
@JRCART can't wait to see what you think of it.

Really excited for this car, I would hope it's a damn sight cheaper than the SLS given that's it's smaller and less powerful...although it sounds like it might almost be the better car. I just keep thinking, how great would this car be with the M157.

It would be more nose heavy and struggle with repeated laps on the track. I prefer this for this type of car.

It will be cheaper than the SLS cuz it not a super car, they made it to compare it with the 911 and the nissan GTR and for sure it will be cheaper & as the AMG CEO said:
It would the best AMG ever !

And about the M157 the will never ever made an engine like this again Because of its hight displacement & with it V8 muscle sound & fully of torque

Those are some sweet pics of an amazing engine. Can't wait to see some comparison tests between this and the 911.

    Goes on sale March 2015

Mercedes-Benz has disclosed full details about the engine which will power the upcoming AMG GT.
It turns out previous rumors were spot on as the AMG GT will feature a twin-turbo V8 4.0-liter engine delivering 510 PS (375 kW) at 6,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) between 1,750 rpm and 4,750 rpm.
Codenamed M178, this Euro 6-compliant engine has a dry weight of 209 kg (460 lbs) and benefits from lightweight pistons and twin overhead camshafts while the flow-optimized cylinder heads feature zirconium alloy for optimal temperature and thermal conductivity. The cylinder walls have been lined with a nano-slide coating in order to diminish friction losses and there's no need for a conventional oil pan as the engineers used a dry sump lubrication technology.
The same engine will also find its way under the hood of the upcoming C63 AMG models (sedanClick here to enlarge, estate, coupe and cabriolet) but we will see it first on the AMG GT set to be unveiled this fall before going on sale March 2015.

Yep. Looks like a very low center of gravity and good weight distribution.

That is same exact torque figure (479tq) from the SLS with the M157. What were you expecting?

It is basically C63 507 numbers, but actually with more torque.

Exactly, much more torque through the curve.
